With the so-called WebExtensions Mozilla is working on a new standard for Firefox Add-ons. Now Mozilla has given a status update where we stand with the development.

Mozilla’s status update to Web Extensions for Firefox – In August the first time Mozilla has officially announced the WebExtensions. WebExtensions are compatible with the upcoming multi-process architecture of Firefox and provide many API matches to the extension system of Google Chrome, which the cross-browser development of add-ons for Chrome, Opera, Firefox, and possibly in the future, Microsoft Edge is intended to simplify considerably.

Mozilla’s status update to Web Extensions for Firefox – With the release of “Firefox” 45 in March 2016, the following APIs are fully untersützt: alarm, ContextMenuStrip, page action and browser action. The following APIs are partially supported: bookmarks, cookies, extension, i18n, notifications, runtime, storage, tabs, web browsing, and Windows webRequest. A first stable WebExtensions support is currently available for Firefox 48 (to be released July 2016) planned.
