The smartphone operating system is not developed, it has now been announced. In future, however, there should be “new experiments” with networked devices.
Mozilla admits to have failed with its own operating system on the smartphone market. Smartphones with Firefox OS will no longer be sold through mobile phone operators, said Mozilla Manager Ari Jaaksi on “TechCrunch”. The operating system will not be developed. In future, however, there should be “new experiments” with networked devices.
Mozilla Firefox OS was introduced in 2013. Devices with Mozilla’s operating system was initially intended to be a cheap smartphones, especially for developing and emerging countries. They were taken, inter alia in Latin America and in Europe, for example in Poland on the market. However, Android smartphones have been getting cheaper, what Firefox OS quickly took the wind out of the sails. The share of the smartphone business remained minimal. At the same time also smart TV running from Panasonic with Firefox OS.
In June it had however been other sounds from Mozilla to Firefox OS: Although the entity responsible for developing Firefox OS CTO Andreas Gal had left the organization, Mozilla CEO Chris Beard had given a new thrust for but Firefox OS. The system should no longer primarily aimed at low-cost smart phones and other networked devices run on.
To what extent the existing Firefox OS now hergibt the basis for this “new experiments” in this area remains to be seen. Jaaksi emphasized in any event that you have not previously available with Firefox OS the best system for use by the user, so Firefox OS as a smart phone system was distancing itself, but will be on systems for networked systems keep trying.
